Elkhart County Jail Overview
The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office corrections resources place adult jail functions at the Elkhart County Correctional Complex. This is the main adult detention facility for Elkhart County arrests, court holds, local sentences, and inmates waiting for hearings or transfer. The sheriff's correctional materials route the public to inmate lookup, inmate services, visitation, bond information, PREA, victim assistance, volunteer programs, and orientation resources.
The adult jail is not the same as a state prison, federal prison, ICE detention center, work-release placement, or juvenile detention center. A person booked into the Elkhart County Correctional Complex may appear in the Indiana County Jail Public Portal while in county custody. After sentencing or transfer, the better lookup path may change to the Indiana Department of Correction locator, federal court channels, the Bureau of Prisons locator, ICE locator, or a direct records request.
The 2024 sheriff annual report describes the jail's operating work in plain terms: custody, medical care, food service, court appearances, video hearings, attorney visitation, transportation, classification, programming, commissary, and inmate services. That matters for public lookup because a roster entry is only one slice of the custody record. Court dates, bond, case filings, medical privacy, attorney access, and release timing are handled through different systems.
Elkhart County Jail Population
The strongest current local population source is the ECSO Annual Report 2024. It identifies the Elkhart County Correctional Complex as a 950-bed adult corrections facility and reports an average of 906 inmates housed each month during 2024. That average equals about 95 percent of rated bed capacity, a calculated figure based on the report's two published numbers.
Elkhart County has not published a daily jail population dashboard in the reviewed official sources. The roster can show people who are searchable in the public jail portal, but it should not be treated as a full capacity report. The annual report is better for broad population context; the jail roster is better for a current person search.
| Population Measure | What It Means |
|---|---|
| 950 beds | Rated adult correctional complex capacity reported by the sheriff for 2024. |
| 906 average monthly inmates | Average 2024 monthly population, not a real-time count. |
| About 95 percent use | Calculation from 906 divided by 950, not a separately published sheriff rate. |
| State inmate pressure | Local reporting noted state reimbursement issues for state inmates housed locally. |
Elkhart County Inmate Lookup
The correct online lookup for adult county jail custody is the Current Elkhart County Inmates route in the Indiana County Jail Public Portal. The public portal can also be opened from the sheriff's inmate services page. It is used for participating Indiana county jail records, not for juvenile detention, ordinary work-release program supervision, federal sentenced custody, or Indiana state prison custody after transfer.
- Open the Elkhart County route in the Indiana County Jail Public Portal or start at the general INjail Public Portal.
- Search by last name first. Add first name, birth date, county, booked-date range, or released-date range when the name is common.
- Review the result row for name, age, race, sex, booking date, release date, and county when shown.
- Use the View control for the public profile when the browser token flow permits it.
- If the person is not listed, call the jail, file a records request, check MyCase, or search IDOC, BOP, ICE, and VINELink as the custody level requires.
Search results can be affected by spelling, booking completion, portal refresh timing, release timing, transfers, court sealing, and juvenile status. The research found no official refresh interval, so the Elkhart County jail roster should not be described as real time.
| Channel | Use It For |

Elkhart County Jail Visits
Elkhart County jail visitation uses Securus video visitation. The official inmate visitation page says visitors must register, be approved, and schedule at least 24 hours before the visit. Onsite visits are video visits from the jail lobby, not free movement into a housing unit. Remote visits use a camera and microphone device away from the jail.
The sheriff visitation page is a useful source for the exact rules because classification affects how many onsite visits a person may receive each week. One adult and one child may be at a booth at a time, visitors may be searched, and dress rules apply. Remote violations can cancel the visit or account.
| Visit Type | Schedule | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Onsite video | Any day the lobby is open, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., prescheduled 24 hours ahead | No official fee stated |
| Remote video | Monday-Sunday, 9:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m., prescheduled 24 hours ahead | $6.95 for 20 minutes; $13.90 for 40 minutes |
| Attorney remote visit | Handled through the same system | Fee not stated; not monitored or recorded per sheriff page |

Use the image as a visual cue only. The live sheriff page should be checked before a visit because schedule access and vendor steps can change.
Elkhart County Jail Mail
Elkhart County separates non-legal mail from legal mail. Non-legal mail is sent to a scanning address in Jonesboro, Arkansas, delivered electronically through kiosks or tablets, and originals are destroyed after processing. Legal mail goes to the Elkhart County Corrections Center address and is opened in the inmate's presence when it is attorney-client mail.
| Service | Elkhart County Detail |
|---|---|
| Non-legal mail | Elkhart County Jail, Inmate Name/Inmate ID, PO Box 16367, Jonesboro, AR 72401. |
| Legal mail | Elkhart County Corrections Center, 26861 C.R. 26, Elkhart, IN 46517. |
| Phone and voicemail | Inmates may make calls; they cannot receive phone calls, but Securus voicemail may be available. |
| Electronic correspondence | JailATM supports messages and picture attachments. |
| Deposits | Lobby kiosk accepts cash, credit, and debit with a $3.75 convenience fee per transaction for every $100 deposited. |
Calls are monitored and recorded, except for protected attorney communications handled under attorney-visit rules. Commissary money may be used for commissary, barber services, medical expenses, court fines, restitution, and other charges. Money orders are no longer accepted for inmate accounts, according to the sheriff inmate services material.
Elkhart County Jail Records
Indiana public-record law is the backdrop for jail records, but it does not make every detail public. IC 5-14-3 provides the general public-records framework. Locally, the sheriff public-record request form lets a requester ask for identifying information, charges, arrest circumstances, reasons placed in jail, custody and release timing, transfer details, and bond or bail amount when fixed.
- Booking
- The intake record created after arrest or surrender at the jail.
- Hold
- A custody reason tied to another court, agency, warrant, or legal process.
- Bond
- A court-set release condition that can be financial or nonfinancial.
- Transfer
- A move from county jail to another custody level, such as state prison after sentencing.
For court charges after filing, use Indiana MyCase and the Elkhart County clerk or court for official copies. For a current jail roster walkthrough, the companion Elkhart County jail inmate records page focuses on search fields and profile data.
Elkhart County Jail Programs
The 2024 annual report lists Wellpath Care as the contracted medical and behavioral-health provider and reports major use of medical, dental, mental-health, and counseling services. It also lists classes such as Anger Management, Domestic Violence, high school diploma or equivalency, Inside Out Dad, Financial Literacy, Master Your Money, Moral Recognition Therapy, Seeking Safety, Staying Quit, Taking the High Road, and Victim Impact.
Program counts are population facts, not promises that every inmate can enroll. The report says male programming had 1,186 enrollments and 720 completions in 2024, while female programming had 300 enrollment positions and 167 completions. Releases, bond, sentence completion, and transfer can all end a class before completion.
Note: Confirm custody, visit approval, and mail rules with the jail before travel or sending items.
