Elkhart County Jail Roster Overview
The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office routes public inmate lookup through the Indiana County Jail Public Portal. The county route displays current Elkhart County inmates, while the general search can include all participating counties. The sheriff's inmate-services material says ECSO provides information but is not responsible for updates and administration of the lookup site, so a missing or delayed result should be checked through the jail phone, public-record request, court records, or the correct state or federal locator.
The adult jail roster covers county-jail custody. It does not replace IDOC's offender locator for sentenced state prisoners, BOP's inmate locator for federal sentenced prisoners, or the ICE detainee locator for immigration detention. Elkhart County Community Corrections Work Release is a residential program tied to court and program placement. The juvenile detention center is separate from the adult public roster and has more restricted public-access rules.
Access chain: Start with INjail, then call (574) 891-2100, use the ECSO records request route, check MyCase for charges, and move to IDOC, BOP, ICE, or VINELink as the custody type requires.
Use the Elkhart County Inmate Roster
The portal accepts several search paths. A last-name search is usually the cleanest first step because booking names may include a full legal name, suffix, hyphenated surname, or spelling that differs from what family members use. Date filters can help when a recent booking or release is known. If the result is too broad, add first name or date of birth.
- Open the current Elkhart County inmates route or the statewide INjail portal.
- Enter at least one value. The portal displays an error if no search value is entered.
- Set the county to Elkhart when using the general search, or stay on the county route for current Elkhart County inmates.
- Add first name, birth date, booked-date range, or released-date range to narrow the result set.
- Open the View link when a result appears. The detail modal may show booking, release, hold, case, charge, bond, and mugshot fields.
- If no match appears, wait for booking to finish, check spelling, call the jail, or use a records request or other custody locator.
The current Elkhart County inmates route is the direct roster entry for adult county-jail custody.
That county route is best for current local custody, while the broader portal helps when a person may have been booked in another participating Indiana county.
Elkhart County Roster Search Fields
The INjail portal uses a browser flow with reCAPTCHA/token handling. Research confirmed the public form fields and result columns from the portal interface and app template, but direct API profile calls outside that browser flow were blocked by a token-required validation error. Public searches should use the portal interface.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last Name | Text | One value required overall | Max length 50 in the template; best starting field. |
| First Name | Text | No | Add for common last names. |
| Birth Date | Date picker | No | Useful when several people share a name. |
| County | Dropdown | No | Elkhart appears as participating county code 20 and fips 18039. |
| Booked Between | Date range | No | Useful for recent arrests when spelling is uncertain. |
| Released Between | Date range | No | Useful for people who may have bonded out or transferred. |
Elkhart County Inmate Profile Fields
An Elkhart County inmate profile can combine identity, booking, hold, case, and bond data. The portal result rows show name, age, race, sex, booked-on date, released-on date, and county when the general search is used. The detail modal can add physical descriptors, arrest details, cases, charges, and a mugshot component if public data is available.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Mugshot | Booking photo component or default no-photo image. |
| Name / INjail ID | Formatted name and portal identifier. |

Elkhart County Inmate Lookup Fallbacks
A failed roster search does not prove the person is free. Booking may not be complete, the name may be entered differently, the person may be released, or the person may be in another custody system. The sheriff/jail phone at (574) 891-2100 is the immediate local channel for custody and jail-process questions. In-person records access is at 26861 County Road 26, Elkhart, IN 46517, but visitors should confirm lobby access before arrival.
Records not shown online can be requested through the ECSO public-record request form or by emailing Records@ElkhartCountySheriff.com. The form includes checkboxes for booking information, charges, arrest circumstances, reasons placed in jail, custody/discharge/transfer time, and bail or bond amount when fixed. Court charges after filing are searched in Indiana MyCase, and release notifications can be monitored through VINELink.
County, State, Federal, and ICE Inmates
Custody level controls the lookup tool. Elkhart County jail records are local and often tied to a new arrest, a pending case, a local sentence, or a hold. IDOC records are for sentenced Indiana prisoners after transfer. BOP covers federal sentenced prisoners from 1982 forward. ICE covers immigration detention by A-number or biographic search. A federal pretrial detainee may be handled by the U.S. Marshals Service, but no public USMS locator comparable to BOP or ICE was located.
| Custody | Where to Look | Elkhart County Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Adult county jail | INjail Public Portal | Primary path for local arrests and recent releases. |
| State prison | IDOC offender locator | Use after conviction, sentencing, and transfer to state custody. |
| Federal prison | BOP inmate locator | No BOP facility was found in Elkhart County. |
| Immigration detention | ICE locator | No official ICE detention facility page was found for Elkhart County Jail. |

Booking Process in Elkhart County
A person may be arrested by sheriff's deputies, Elkhart police, Goshen police, Indiana State Police, or another agency and then transported to the Elkhart County Correctional Complex if detention is required. Intake creates the booking record. Indiana jail standards require admission and inmate records, and the public profile can show name, booking number, arrest date, arresting agency, release field, hold field, and case or charge data if public.
Booking can also include search, property handling, medical screening, classification, and housing assignment. The 2024 sheriff's annual report identifies Wellpath Care as the medical and behavioral health provider and lists classification among jail staff responsibilities. A person may not appear in the portal until booking and system processing are far enough along. Release can also be delayed by no-bond status, another agency hold, DOC transfer, federal or ICE custody, or a court order.
- Booking charge
- An allegation recorded at intake. It may differ from the charge later filed by the prosecutor.
- Hold
- A jail notation that another legal reason may prevent release.
- Classification
- A jail assessment used to assign housing and supervision level.
Elkhart County Visitation Rules
Adult jail visitation uses Securus video visitation. Visitors must register and be approved before visiting, and visits must be scheduled at least 24 hours ahead. Onsite visits can be scheduled any day the lobby is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Remote visits are available Monday through Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Visitors are subject to search, clothing rules, and conduct rules.
| Visit Type | Schedule / Access | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| On-site video visit | Any day the lobby is open, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.; schedule 24 hours ahead | No official fee stated |
| Remote video visit | Monday-Sunday, 9:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m.; schedule 24 hours ahead | $6.95 for 20 minutes; $13.90 for 40 minutes |
| Remote attorney visit | Uses same system; not monitored or recorded | Fee not stated |
The sheriff's visitation page documents the onsite and remote video visit rules used by Elkhart County jail visitors.
The schedule and approval rules matter because a roster match alone does not authorize a visit. The visit still has to be scheduled and approved through the jail's process.
Contact an Elkhart County Inmate
Inmates cannot receive ordinary phone calls, but they can make monitored and recorded calls, and voicemail is handled through Securus. The sheriff's page warns that calls are monitored and that call content may be used in investigations. Attorney visits have a different privacy rule when handled as remote attorney visits through the approved system.
Non-legal mail does not go directly to the jail. It must be addressed to Elkhart County Jail, Inmate Name/Inmate ID, PO Box 16367, Jonesboro, AR 72401, where it is scanned and delivered electronically. Legal mail goes to Elkhart County Corrections Center, 26861 C.R. 26, Elkhart, IN 46517, and must include the inmate name and jail ID. Books and subscriptions must come from approved sources and follow the sheriff's limits.
Elkhart County Commissary Funds
Jail commissary funds are separate from court bond and separate from Community Corrections program fees. The sheriff's inmate-services page says funds may be used for commissary, barber services, medical expenses, court-imposed fines, restitution, and other charges. Lobby deposits use a machine that accepts cash, credit cards, and debit cards, with funds available immediately.
| Method | Details | Fee / Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Lobby machine | Cash, credit card, or debit card; receipt provided | $3.75 convenience fee per transaction for every $100 deposited |
| Online JailATM | Requires account creation and credit/debit card | Vendor fees may apply |
| Money orders | No longer accepted for inmate accounts | Do not send |
Note: Confirm custody status before sending money, because release, transfer, or a hold can change where funds should go.
